TV Without Commercials: Game of Thrones 3.2 “Dark Wings, Dark Words”

GameOfThronesHeaderEven though last week was the official season premier for Game of Thrones, it didn’t quite feel like the season was officially underway until now.  All of the major threads of storyline have been revealed and I personally had forgotten just how excited I was to see them resume.  The one I was most looking forward to the most was easily Brienne escorting Jaime, but now I can’t wait to see what happens with Brandon and his newly discovered ability.  His new friend Jojen Reed is especially interesting, and while Bran’s story line was kind of boring last season it looks like it is going to be one of the most intriguing this time around.

The only thing I didn’t like about the Brienne and Jaime story was that it appears to have come to an end.  Of course I’m excited to see what becomes of them now that they have been captured, but I really enjoyed their conversations while they made their way through the woods.  Jamie always has something interesting and humorous to say but there are genuine moments and sincerity in there.  Especially when he looks at her and says that he doesn’t blame her, and that you can’t choose the people you love.  In a lot of ways I feel like that brief moment between the two of them gave us a ton of insight into Jamie Lannister as a human being.  Jamie is in love in with Cersei, despite all of the complications that go along with their relationship but he feels that he has no choice in the matter.

What has become of Theon Greyjoy?  He is obviously in a terrible position at the moment, and his torture looks absolutely horrific.  Is this all being done to him by his own people? I don’t really understand but I think the confusion is intentional.  That one boy tells him that his sister sent him and that he will come back to rescue him that night but that’s all we know.  I guess his bad decisions are starting to catch up with him, but hopefully he will be okay.  I’m mostly interested in what will become of his relationship with the Starks now, but Theon has his priorities aimed elsewhere at the moment and who could blame him.

The biggest surprise of the season so far had to be when Lady Catherine said she prayed all night that Jon Snow would survive through the night when he had caught the pox.  Any interaction between her and Jon Snow that we have seen has made no effort to hide the animosity between the two.  Apparently whenever Jon Snow is in serious peril, she is able to overcome her jealousy of his mother and accept him into the family.  I wonder if that situation will happen again and Catherine will find it in her heart to love him as a son or if anyone south of the wall will ever see Jon Snow again now that he is becoming so close with Mance Rayder, and his army of united wildlings.

I don’t really know what to make of Sansa’s conversation with Margaery Tyrell and her grandmother.  Sansa breaks down and tells them the truth about how Joffrey is a monster.  In fact, she even uses the word, monster.  The way Margaery and her grandmother react to what Sansa tells them is what is so offsetting about the whole thing.  To put it bluntly, the Tyrells did not seem to care.  When Sansa described Joffrey and his terrible deeds, Margaery’s grandmother simply said, well that’s too bad.  They are determined that Margaery shall be the queen, and it appears as though nothing is going to be able to prevent that.

Arya is easily one of my favorite characters in the show and I’m glad that her, Gendry and Hot Pie are still alive and well.  Those men who they run into are extremely interesting though.  The two who do the talking seem to be highly skilled at what they do and I became even more interested in them once it was revealed that they knew the hound, and that the hound knew them.  I was kind of shocked when the hound revealed who Arya was though.  Especially since he seemed to like Sansa so much.  Maybe he did that because he knows these are good men?  I’m not really sure what he was going for there and I really hope we only have to wait one week and not two to see more of Arya.
