Coming in at 3 for 9 now, Borderlands content is clearly the MVP of these Suggestion Boxes, with Ben’s hype for the upcoming sequel, and love of the series in general, rubbing off on me. And just think, I still have the Pre-Sequel and Tales from the Borderlands to play for the first time too!
Ben’s TV Pick: Doom Patrol – While the DC Universe subscription service’s first live-action series, Titans was a big disappointment, the latter two (one of which I’ve mentioned before) are fantastic. Doom Patrol’s cast of misfit metahumans, played by the likes of Diane Guerroro, Brendan Fraser (man I missed him!), and Matt Bomer, as well as their savior/leader (Timothy Dalton) are all believable, sympathetic characters, and each have their own individual moments of hilarity and heartbreak, never letting you forget that underneath all the powers, bandages, and robotic components, they are still human, for better or worse. It may not have the gothic and body horror of Swamp Thing, but Doom Patrol goes to equally dark, if not even weirder, places.
And oh my God, Alan Tudyk is amazing as the creepily, hilariously meta Mr. Nobody!
Lauren’s Video Game Pick: Borderlands 2 DLC: Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep – Though it’s not an official rule for these posts, I like to keep my suggestions to things that are new to me. That said, I was about to go two Suggestion Boxes in a row with nothing to contribute, so if I’m going to break my rule, it might as well be for my favorite DLC. Now I am not going to say Tiny Tina is the greatest Dungeon Master of all time because Matt Mercer exists, but I will say she definitely has a flair for the imaginative in this escape from reality. It has Lord of the Ring references, carnivorous loot chests that terrified me every time I forgot to warily check for traps, conflicting party members with extremely different play styles (“I punch him!”) acting as the voices on high in what is probably the only type of “meta gaming” D&D players won’t rage-out over, and a punching bag of a boy king name Jeffrey for those of you still feeling betrayed over the final season of Game of Thrones. And within all that winking, humor, and chaotic carnage, it has a bag of holding’s worth of heart as Tiny Tina copes with loss. Seriously, best DLC ever.
Ben’s Video Game Pick: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – A friend of mine asked for my help in running through the story (which chronicles the rise of one of gaming’s best villains, Handsome Jack) of this interquel in the Borderlands series, and I was more than happy to jump back in one last time. Even though it’s the weakest entry in the franchise so far, I can still easily recommend playing through it at least once. The Pre-Sequel introduces new Vault Hunters, supporting characters, gear, weapon archetypes, an elemental damage type, and gameplay mechanics that change up the classic Borderlands formula. Fingers crossed most of them return for Borderlands 3!
