Got some free time and wondering what to watch, play, listen to, etc.? Well we have some suggestions for you!
Lauren’s Movie Pick: A Simple Favor – What a weird missing person mystery. Not opening of Moulin Rouge weird, but the first 15-20 minutes between Anna Kendrick’s socially awkward mommy vlogger and Blake Lively’s abrasively intimidating style icon had me curling in on myself in one of the most uncomfortable cringe balls I could manage to restrict into. I really thought I was going to hate this one, but once we get past the getting-to-know-you period and to the what-the-Hell-happened-to-Lively’s-character portion things start to get interesting. And then things start to get REALLY interesting, snowballing this complicated whodunit (or whodunwutexactly) to the finish line.
Ben’s Movie Pick: The Head Hunter – The Head Hunter is an expertly-crafted, dark fantasy horror that follows a father (brilliantly portrayed by Christopher Rygh) who slays monsters in the hope of eventually crossing paths with the beast that took his daughter from him. The film masterfully uses the less-is-more approach with its creatures, and builds a macabre world that I’d love to see even more of. It’s also worth noting that The Head Hunter was made with just $30,000, so I can’t wait to see what director Jordan Downey will do when/if he’s given a bigger budget for his next movie.
Ben’s Movie Pick: Mortal Kombat – Mortal Kombat was the first ‘guilty pleasure’ movie I ever watched, and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. While it isn’t super faithful to the lore of the games, the Mortal Kombat movie is just similar enough to keep hardcore fans happy and easy enough to understand for people who’ve never even heard of the fighter series. Throw in some over the top acting, surprisingly great choreography, a couple of hilariously memorable lines, the most kickass theme song in the history of kickass theme songs, and you’ve got the greatest video game movie to date.
Yeah yeah, I know how low of a bar that is.
Lauren’s Music Pick: “Nightshade” by the Lumineers – Whatever your thoughts on the current season of Game of Thrones, it’s undeniable that, on the whole, the TV series and books have laid an inspirational world of fantasy and conflict before us. So inspiring, in fact, that an album pulling together songs based on George R. R. Martin’s own song of ice and fire was released recently. A lot of the music isn’t quite in my preferred genre, but the Lumineers’ contribution to For the Throne is as beautiful as it is haunting. Not that I’d expect anything less from a song named for a sedative that is poisonous in large doses (cheers to you, Lady Olenna). Not sure which option is preferable for the singer (likely Jon, based on the lyrics), but I imagine as long as they’re rid of the suffocating strife that overwhelms most in this world they probably won’t mind what the plant has in store for them. Depends on the day, I’d imagine. (Listen to the song on YouTube, here.)
Ben’s Movie Pick: Soldier – Despite Soldier‘s flaws, I can’t help but enjoy the Hell out of it. Kurt Russell gives a solid, badass performance in it, Jason Isaacs seems to be having fun as the love-to-hate villain, and the action is terrific, with one sequence being among my all-time favorites. It certainly could’ve used a better story, and a couple members of the supporting cast are a little weak, but Soldier is still one of the first movies that comes to mind whenever I hear anything about Kurt Russell.
Ben’s Movie Pick: Someone Great – Someone Great is a humorous and heartfelt romantic comedy, though I’d say “dramedy,” that uses its talented leads (Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise) to get the most out of its moments of laughter and heartache. The film may be formulaic, but the undeniable chemistry between the starring trio, banging soundtrack, and a strong performance from Lakieth Stanfield keep it consistently entertaining.
