I don’t know about everyone else but last week’s premiere of the second season of The Newsroom, left me feeling afraid and utterly disappointed. When it was all said and done, all that came to mind was what happened to my show? This week’s episode erased all of those feelings and doubts, and made it clear that The Newsroom is back!
I spent most of last week trying to figure out what was so bad about the season premiere and it finally occurred to me. Even though last week was the first episode of season two, it never seemed to have a beginning. We were immediately thrown into the middle of something with questions being raised all around us constantly. The flashbacks that followed gave us some answers but most of them left us even more confused. Without a true beginning, it almost felt like we were watching a finale, but even then it didn’t have the ending of a finale. Without a beginning or an end we were left with a middle chapter, that wasn’t a bad episode but the time I spent trying to figure out what was going on left me with an incomplete feeling.
Despite all of the difficulties involved with the season premiere, this week’s episode was amazing. It was funny, witty and the dialogue was fantastic. All of these elements became a staple of The Newsroom during season one, and they were all there last night. While last week’s episode wasn’t necessarily lacking in these elements it just didn’t have the same feel to it. It was confusing but, it was completely necessary to enhance the story this week. While it still isn’t clear what it is that has gotten everyone from Will McAvoy’s news team into this legal mess from last week, things are clearly progressing in that direction.
The whole time I watched season one it seemed pretty apparent the they would only be able to drag the whole Maggie and Jim not being together thing out for so long. Eventually Don and Maggie would finally break up for good and she would just slowly migrate into being Jim’s girlfriend. I did not see the two of them leaving New York and just running away from not only each other, but from everyone. It makes sense why Maggie went to Africa now, I wouldn’t want to have a roommate like Lisa either. I always liked Lisa last season and I never would have guessed her character could be so vicious. When she whispered that line in Maggie’s ear my stomach dropped. Maggie’s face was perfect, and you could feel the tension and fear as the conversation continued. It looks like we are going to have to wait a few episodes, but I feel like once Jim and Maggie see each other again, it is going to be a pretty powerful moment.
The best moments on this show always involve Will doing something awesome. His rant about why he was going to bail Neil out of the police station was not only powerful and emotional but also hilarious. The rant was just a warm up for Will though, the real moment came at the police station. Will had been pretty lethargic so far and seeing his old self again was refreshing to say the least. I absolutely love when he uses his power and wits to accomplish something righteous. As if the episode wasn’t a good enough reminder before that moent, The Newsroom is definitely back and I could not be more excited about it!
