54th Annual Grammys: Nominees and Predictions 2011

The 54th Annual Grammy nominations have now been released, and I decided to put my own opinions and predictions for the February 12th telecast.

Record of the Year:

  • “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele
  • “Holocene” by Bon Iver
  • “Grenade” by Bruno Mars
  • “The Cave” by Mumford and Sons
  • “Firework” by Katy Perry

-Even though Bruno, Mumford, and Katy have all had big years (and I guess Bon Iver did, too), no one has been more successful than England’s own Adele. “Rolling In The Deep” has been everywhere all year, and has never lost steam…until her next single came out. There’s no question that Adele wins this one.

Song of the Year:

  • “All Of The Lights” by Kanye West
  • “The Cave” by Mumford and Sons
  • “Grenade” by Bruno Mars
  • “Holocene” by Bon Iver
  • “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele

-“All Of The Lights” will give “Rolling In The Deep” a run for its money, but c’mon, let’s be honest, Adele will probably take that one too. The other three songs are pretty irrelevant in this conversation.

Album of the Year:

  • Adele’s 21
  • Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light
  • Lady Gaga’s Born This Way
  • Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans
  • Rihanna’s Loud

-Do you see a trend here? Adele will go for the Big Three Sweep this year. None of these albums will rob her from this. Bruno *might* put up some sort of fight, but c’mon. We all know 21 is better than Doo-Wop.

Best New Artist:

  • The Band Perry
  • J. Cole
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Bon Iver
  • Skrillex

-Wouldn’t it be something if Skrillex comes out of nowhere and WINS? That would be crazy. However, the three big contenders here are Bon Iver, The Band Perry, and Nicki Minaj. Since Bon Iver isn’t technically new, and The Band Perry doesn’t have a huge following, it seems like it would be Nicki Minaj’s award to win.

Now for some awards that I’m personally interested in:

Best Rap Album:

  • Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne
  • Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV
  • Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers
  • Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday
  • Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

-This is Kanye West’s to lose. With both Watch The Throne AND My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy being nominated, the people judging might have a split decision on which is better. That will, of course, end in neither one of them getting it. Lil Wayne, and even Lupe Fiasco, might sneak past and take the Grammy from under Kanye’s nose. If I had to pick, I’d go with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy over everything, but with the voting, Lasers might actually win it. Good for either one of them.

Best Alternative Music Album:

  • Bon Iver’s Bon Iver
  • Death Cab For Cutie’s Codes And Keys
  • Foster The People’s Torches
  • My Morning Jacket’s Circuital
  • Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs

-I would PREFER that Foster The People or Death Cab For Cutie win this award, but for the fact that Bon Iver won’t win any of the major ones listed above, he will probably take this award home with him.

Best Rock Album:

  • Jeff Beck’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul
  • Foo Fighters’ Wasting Life
  • Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers’ I’m With You
  • Wilco’s The Whole Love

This is just like the Alternative Album winner above; I’d rather Wilco or Red Hot Chili Peppers win (hell, I’d rather see Manchester Orchestra win either one of the two), but it’s going to be Foo Fighters award tonight. Probably because it won’t win the Best Album award.

So those are just some of my opinions. What do you think, who will win? Who should be nominated?
