Alternative rock duos have been on the rise ever since one of the best of all time called it quits (I’m of course talking about the White Stripes). From Panic! at the Disco and Middle Class Rut, to Sleigh Bells and Cults, these duos have stepped up and made some beautiful noise in popular music today. Luckily, each one brings a new sound to help define themselves, making the incredibly specific crowd of “duos” seem less crowded than it actually is.
Well, why don’t we add another band to the list. Christopher Martin and Chris Phillips, also known as IAMDYNAMITE, come with a quieter sound than a band like Middle Class Rut, but can go as fast and hard as a full band. Martin’s vocal work reminds me a bit like The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ Ronnie Winter, just with a lot more range, and what sounds to be a lot more fun. The overall sound is simplistic (it’s only two guys, a guitar and a drumset, but they make the most out of what little they use in their major label debut.
Their opening tracks to Supermegafantastic embodies that fact. “Where Will We Go,” “Hi Lo,” and “Riot In The Neon Light” all sound reminiscently similar to each other, but the fun, upbeatness of the first three songs definitely makes up for it. Most of the tracks that followed sound the same as the aforementioned opening, but each feels fresh, and is a great substitute from the “radio rock” that gets played everywhere.
Some nit-picks, the album is short. About ten songs long and about 32 minutes long makes it a good listen, but leaves you wanting more. And not all tracks are perfect on their freshman release. Their slower songs, including their closer “Annie,” is pretty drawn out, with not a whole lot of substance. I know that they are a two-man group, but it would be nice if they could incorporate some more instruments in their delivery. Again, this is their freshman release, so this is only liner notes for a solid debut.
IAMDYNAMITE are on a good track right now; their minimalist sound makes them unique, and can make them stand out on its own. And the overall quality of the songs are something else that should be commended. No song sounds played out, but a refreshing taste of what could come out of Martin and Phillips. For anyone looking for new music, this is one to dive into. This is definitely an artist to watch in the upcoming years.
