TV Review: The New Girl 1.5: Cece Crashes

new-girl-posterThe New Girl is fast and furiously funny again this week with almost no down beats.  Our story is split into two camps here as Cece invades the apartment to get away from her face tattooed, diabetic, DJ and newly ex-boyfriend.

Half our story is Winston and Schmidt trying to “close it” with Cece and awkward hilarity ensues.  From Winston stumbling over his words or Schmidt’s over compensating, neither stands a chance and seeing them fall in line for Cece works wonderfully.  Everyone involved in the trio is turning in their best work yet on the show and I hope they keep the awkwardness around these three prevalent as the show moves forward; especially if we get more bumbling Winston.  I saw the little Schmidt/Cece thing coming and I am intrigued to see what they do with it.  Schmidt getting jealous of a new man in Cece’s life could be a very funny scenario in particular.  Oh, and more bird cat please.

Our other characters, Jess and Nick, are sent on just as awkward of an adventure to the drugstore after Cece plants seeds in Jess’ head that Nick is into her.  Jake Johnson doesn’t get a whole lot to do, playing the straight man here, but Zooey Deschanel more than carries the load.  Her awkward weirdness is in full swing and she gets to show off some great physical comedy.  From trying to run from Nick’s pointing feet to running away, the wrong way, down the street as Deschanel nails it; it’s fun to see Jess’ insecurity come out.  The show nicely counters this with Jess standing up to Cece and showing Jess’ strength in knowing who she wants to be; culminating in a sweet moment between Jess and Nick over toothpaste filled mouths.

A simple and less quote filled episode shows us plenty of character moments while providing just as many laughs as its previous efforts.  The show is showing some growth and that it can do both character work and humor at once, a great sign for moving forward and the potential of the show.

Bullets:

-“it’s just a deeper v.”

-“put on my mono”

-Winston has rip off pants?  Makes a good napkin face too.

-loved Jess’s “apology” for Cece and how she thinks she is consoling the guys or something

-Winston’s dancing voice, best moment yet for him

-“I’m from the town in Footloose.”

-“are you sheep dogging her?”

-“Parkour!”

-“Your mothers going to slam your mother.”

-127 Hours cleavage, brilliant

-Jess’ disapproving look at Cece after Nick comes in the room, amazing quick beat

-“I’m just walking like a friend.”

-Deschanel was great in the drug store scene, “I don’t use toilet paper”

-Bird Cat!

-and Zooey tops herself in the car, look at that run.

-“that’s not the way home!”

-Schmidt plays a great awkward dude.

-impressive India rant

-“do I need thicker pajamas?”

-“maybe I have really sexy posture.”

-that is certainly unsexy posture, but kind of cute still

-“I don’t jump in the potato sack with the first potato that has diabetes”

-the cat has a nest, he was raised by birds

-buffet analogy not working, “kids eat for free” was funny though

-Schmidt’s face when holding hands; he would get eaten alive

-are they rushing the Nick and Jess romance?

Till next week…

  1. Seriously, my mom, sis and I all watched this together and I think this was definitely the most we have laughed at the show yet. Other than the pilot, this was my favorite episode so far for sure (not saying anything against the other episodes either cuz I have loved pretty much all of them).

I agree, more bird cat, and never lose that awkwardness. And I think that if anyone still has mopey faces when it came to Winston replacing Coach, this episode was the one to finally cement his place in the group. That fight between his tissues and Schmidt’s ‘mono in the beginning was fantastic.
