Now Playing Review – Jackass 3D

Johnny Knoxville and his team of pain seeking, poop joke “professionals” are back with a whole new group of ridiculous stunts not for the faint of heart, and this time it’s in 3D!

I’m sure that most of you don’t really need a refresher on what this film is about, and the rest that don’t know about the old MTV show of pranks and stunts would probably not want to see the film if they were educated on it, so we are just gonna skip over that bit and say that this film brings back the gang with a whole new slew of shorts compiled for a feature length film.

The basics stay the same from what has come before, ranging from the animal attacks, various bodily function projectiles, facial assaults, and general lack of concern for safety, but that does not keep this from being any less hilarious than their prior work. Let’s just say that if Mike Wazowski was in the theater to bottle laughter then this film could solve any energy crisis (What? Too sophisticated for a Monsters, Inc. reference?  Then you are definitely too sophisticated from Jackass as well).  Let’s just put it another way, I was laughing so hard during the film that I actually brought blood to my mouth from accidentally biting down on my cheek.  Apparently chewing gum and hilarity do not mix.

The great thing about this film is that it does not overstay its welcome once the different shorts start to feel like the same formula with a mixture of different variables.  After all, there really does come a time when the poop jokes become old.  What doesn’t become old is one’s reaction to these things.  The one thing that really kept my laughter going was watching the reactions of the people standing on the sidelines in response to what is happening.  Yes Steve-O taking a baseball to the nether region is funny enough, but mix that with Ryan Dunn reveling in the outcome of his swings trajectory in the additional slow-mo footage makes it priceless.

Speaking of slow-mo, this film really knows how to take full advantage of this tool.  Not only do we get to laugh over and over again at the instant replay, but transferring the footage to a different speed really allows for every little detail of a short but sweet event to further unravel, down to the point where you get to see just when things go wrong (for them, but oh so right for us).  And slow-mo really does just make everything exponentially more entertaining.  For one thing, I sure didn’t know just how malleable the face is when unexpectedly hit with a boxing glove.  Now I do, and I must say, it sure is a sight to see.

On the other hand, the one thing that isn’t really taken full advantage of is the 3D technology.  Though it does add a great amount to the opening and closing segments (which I must say really do bookend the film well), there really isn’t a great need for seeing this film in 3D.  Plus, there is enough vomit and feces in this film that the addition of 3D glasses really is not necessary to start to feel a wee bit nauseous during a viewing.

The years of inhibitions to the wind and bodily harm sure has taken a toll on all those involved.  For one thing, whether they realize it or not the years have done some psychological damage to the point that they are all seen constantly guarding their man bits with their hands.  So I would just like to thank them for accepting the torment that most sane people are not willing to endure, because it sure is funny.

Final Grade: B+
