Glee decided to pay tribute to Madonna in this episode, and did a pretty kick ass job at it! First off, I wanted to say this episode rendered a total of 12.98m viewers last night! After its midseason hiatus last week, it received 13.66m. I’m so happy so see that this show is doing so well!
Sue wants to pay homage to Madonna by making the Principal play Madonna’s greatest hits over the PA all day. As a result, much of this episode have background music, which was a nice touch. This episode was highly focused on the ‘V’ word. Yes you guessed it, virginity. I know this show is Fox but did they have to avoid using the word sex in the entire episode? It was just annoying… Rachel, Finn, and Emma are all virgins and are thinking of giving it up. After being pressured by Jesse, Rachel decides to give it up. Finn wants to get over Rachel by sleeping with Santana. Emma who is inspired by Madonna, decides to sleep with Will. At the end, only Finn went through with it, only to regret it later.
The plot in this episode was actually going somewhere, and enjoyable, so I give it a B this time.
Express Yourself – The girls are showing the boys they need to be respected. Good number, but did anyone notice how Quinn’s pregnant stomach is non-existent in this number? Hmm…
Borderline/Open Your Heart – Rachel and Finn show why they’re the lead vocals of the group! I thought this number was cute, Rachel and Finn expressing how they really feel for each other through music. I also enjoyed the Madonna-wannabes as they are going through the hallway.
Vogue – Sue’s first musical number. Her vocal plainly sucks, no matter how much it’s been autotuned. The video was enjoyable though, very Madonna-esque.
Like a Virgin – Rachel singing with Finn, Will, and Jesse is just plain awesome. Very well done, except the extensive scenes of foreplay was kind of awkward.
4 Minutes – Kurt and Mercedes get tired of being overshadowed in New Directions and decide to join the Cheerios instead. I’ve personally always hated this song, but it was still enjoyable to watch this number.
What It Feels Like for a Girl – The boys of New Directions singing together around a piano. It was excellent, no doubt. I’m starting to find Will’s excessive hand movements while he sings very annoying though.
Like a Prayer – Super awesome! Rachel starts singing and the rest of the cast joins in. Rachel’s, Kurt’s, and Mercedes’ solo were very good, only Finn’s solo was not impressive. And of course you can’t have Like a Prayer without a gospel choir =)
The music in this episode was excellent, so I’m giving it an A.
