A brief bit of serious talk:

So as most of you probably know by now a plane was crashed into an Austin IRS building today causing extensive damage and potentially one death beyond the pilot.  We later learned that there was an alleged suicide note left online by the pilot, that he had ill will towards the United States government, he hoped and intended to hurt/kill people, and was doing this as a statement against our country’s fundamental basis.

So why is nobody on any news station or major website using the “T” word; Terrorism?

ter·ror·ism [ter-uh-riz-uhm] – the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.

This is an act of terrorism on our country and its ideals.  Is it because he is an American?  That didn’t stop Timothy McVeigh from being labeled a terrorist for his involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing.  Is it because there was a lack of casualties?  That doesn’t change the facts and intentions of the attacker and make it any less a form of terrorism.  So why is nobody calling this an act of terrorism?

What if this plane was found to have been piloted by anyone outside this country, or even a non-white individual?  What would people be saying then.  If this was a middle eastern individual would every news station and publication not be brandishing this as a terrorist attack for sure?  But instead of this being a terrorist activity, which it clearly is, he is quickly being painted as a disturbed, cowardly, and misguided individual an nothing more.  I mean, when the underwear bomber did what he did, which accounted for no damage or loss of life to anything, pundits out of all news outlets were declaring the incident a terrorist act; with Fox News going as far as to claim this was a terrorist act that reflected poorly on the Obama administration.

This double standard of the word and choosing to reserve the use of the word terrorism only in an instance of foreign involvement is despicable and a perfect example of how contrived our media coverage can be.  Now I am thankful that it seems most people went unharmed and at worst this seems to be not much more than some damaged property, but it is an act of terrorism nonetheless and the fact that our media is failing to acknowledge this is just a very frustrating and upsetting development.
